Ann Arundel Chapter, NSDAR
Millersville, Maryland
Millersville, Maryland
Our chapter members are involved in a variety of activities and events. From honoring our veterans and wreath laying ceremonies, to creating educational displays in local libraries, presenting historical educational programs, and visiting our home bound members, our Daughters are making their communities a better place for all.
Our chapter members are part of a sisterhood of Daughters from around the state, the nation, and even the world. Our annual Maryland Society State Conference and the National Society's annual Continental Congress held in Washington D.C. are a wonderful time. We celebrate each other's accomplishments. We recognize those who contribute so much to our communities: nurses, law enforcement officers, teachers, military members, and veteran service organizations. We award scholarships for deserving students and preservation grants for deserving organizations.
Our Namesake
The Ann Arundel Chapter, NSDAR, was named after Lady Anne Arundell. Lady Arundell, born 1615, was the wife of Cecilius "Cecil" Calvert, Second Lord Baltimore who served as governor of Maryland from 1632 to 1675. Cecil's marriage to Anne was fortunate for the creation of Maryland. Anne inherited land and money from her father, which she and Cecil used to fund the new colony. Although neither she nor her husband ever visited the colony that they helped found, Anne was very interested in Maryland. She decorated the ceiling of their home in England with plaster reliefs of the Ark and the Dove, the ships that brought the first colonists to Maryland. In 1649, the Maryland Assembly chose to honor Anne after her death by naming Anne Arundel County after her.
While the Ann Arundel Chapter, NSDAR, members use the contemporary spelling, they pronounce Arundel as "air-n-del", rather than the usual "ah-run-dul."
